How/Why I started journaling

This Blog post is from my old website before I switched to self-hosting. It was published on September 16, 2018

Today I want to talk about a topic that was suggested by @little_loving_lambon Instagram and it is the story of how I started journaling and why. As a kid, I’ve always loved to write. I got my first diary when I was six but I didn’t write a lot in there and most of it is ridiculous. As I got older I started to write stories about things that bothered me and it wasn’t until 2014 I started journaling.

Although my grandpa died when I wasn’t even two years old he was the one who inspired me to start journaling. I love that because I look up to him for many reasons. After World War two my grandpa was one of the first German exchange students to go to the United States. For that year he had a giant red book where he collected all kinds of memories like pictures, cards and even the meal plan of the ship he took there. It took him two weeks to get to the US, which I think is crazy. When I was about to leave for my exchange year in 2014 my dad showed me the book and I immediately knew I wanted to do that as well and this is how it all started. The book is with my uncle now but every time I visit him I look at it and think of my grandpa.

How/Why I Started JournalingI first started to journal without even knowing that it existed. At first, I used a notebook I got from my piano teacher but that soon started to fall apart and my host mom got me this amazing binder that now is jam-packed with memories from my amazing year in the US. My host family had this amazing craft room in their basement no one really used but for me, it was like heaven. I loved it so much I spend a lot of time crafting in there. I’ve always loved to craft and that room just took it to the next level. During that time I also wrote a blog about everything I did and recording all of this was so much fun.

During that year I also discovered planners and wreck this journal. I loved the idea of keeping random doodles and poems in one place but I never really picked it up until I returned home. Before my first day of school back home I got a random notebook out of the trash at my dad’s workplace that I wanted to use as a planner but never did.  In the beginning, it was more of a place to keep my random poems and doodles I made when I was bored in class but then I discovered lettering and later on journaling on Instagram and Pinterest and it all took off from there. Later I started a separate diary, bullet journal, and art journal. Today I have five different journals I work on at the same time and journaling has become what keeps me going every day.

The best thing about journaling is that it helps me to cope with my brain and that I met many amazing people over Instagram by sharing the things I love to do. I never thought that it would become such a huge part of my life and I love that it all started with the book my grandpa made.

If you like to journal, how long have you been doing it and how did you start?

Lots of Love
