DIY traveler’s notebook insert

This Blog post is from my old website before I switched to self-hosting. It was published on August 19, 2018

A while ago I made a traveler’s notebook insert to start my first pen pal journal. In this journal, I keep all the letters I got from my pen pals because I don’t want to throw them away or lose them. But since I stick so much stuff in my insert it started bending and became so chunky that I couldn’t really get anything new inside. So I made a new one and since I was already making it I thought I’d take some pictures and show you how I made my insert.

This is my now old insert. I might do a flip through of it on YouTube if you want to see what’s inside

Supplies

What I love about this DIY is that you don’t need a lot of supplies.

Paper and cardstock

Something to cut your paper. I am using a cutting knife, a ruler and a cutting board but you can also use simple scissors.

A stapler and an eraser

1. Cut your paper into the right size

First, you need to cut your paper and your cardstock into the size you want your insert to be. Since you are going to line up the edges later you want to make it a little bit bigger than you want it to be in the end. I wanted my insert to be 25cm long and 23cm wide so I cut my paper into 51cm X 47cm.

2. Staple the pages together

Next, you need to align your paper and staple the cover and all the pages together. You don’t need to be very exact when aligning the paper since you are going to line up the edges in the end. What you need to do is to mark the middle of your notebook, which will be the spine later on. You need to open your stapler and place your eraser underneath where you want to staple or else you might staple into your desk. This way you can use a regular stapler. All you need to do then is to staple and close the back of the staples.  I stapled my insert three times.

3. Align your edges

Now all you need to do is to cut off your access paper to line up the pages and cut your insert into the right size. This step is easier when you use a cutting knife but with a little bit of patience scissors will work as well

4. Decorate your cover

Last, I decorated the cover a little bit. Since it already had a pattern on it I didn’t want to go all fancy and just added a little label.

And this is it. I think it is actually pretty easy. I hope you understand my explanations and if you have any questions feel free to ask me in the comments.
